Collection description

Large grains in gravel-bed rivers exert a distinctive influence upon fluvial morphodynamics and flow resistance. Lag deposits are immobile during channel-forming flows. They are products of historical contingency; sourced from river geomorphic and anthropogenic disturbance events that supply atypically coarse material to a river. Such materials cannot be reworked by a river’s contemporary processes. Lag deposits from material sourced from the reworking of material deposited during lahars are emblematic attributes of the Tongariro River, New Zealand. The influence of large grain lag deposits on fluvial morphodynamics at bar heads can be conceptualised across time and space. These materials influence sediment entrainment and transport, hydraulics and habitat, geomorphic unit assemblage and persistence, and long profile evolution. Further recognition of the role of large grain lag deposits is required when assessing landform stability, incorporating the influence of past events within multi-grain size numerical morphodynamic models of landscape evolution
