Given, M. , Gabrieli, S. and Mavrimatis, C. (2026) Digital Archive from Archaeological Excavations at Kourion's Amathous Gate Cemetery, Cyprus, 1995 to 2000. [Data Collection]
Collection description
This collection comprises images, Harris matrices, spreadsheet data, and GIS data from a series of excavations at Kourion's Amathous Gate Cemetery. The excavations were carried out between 1995 and 2000 by the Kourion Amathous Gate Cemetery Group, with the post-excavation and publication of the works occurring between 2017 and 2024. The Early Roman chamber tombs show evidence for commemoration through processions and libations. Following the earthquake of the 370s A.D., they were quarried out, leaving only their rear arcosolia exposed in neatly chiselled vertical facets of rock and new level surfaces for the individual cist tombs of the late fourth-sixth centuries. A well-preserved though largely commingled set of human remains represents at least 73 adults and 62 subadults buried in these tombs.
