Between 2012-13, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 key stakeholders from 10 UK non-commercial health research funding bodies. The research provided insights into how these funders perceive and implement public participation in research funding decisions, highlighting that disciplinary differences, technocratic assumptions, and concerns about scientific integrity shape engagement practices. The findings showed that subsets of the public, such as patients or research users, were more likely to be involved than the lay public, reflecting both inclusive and narrower positivist interpretations of expertise. Overall, the study suggested that effective translation of health research into policy and practice requires recognition of multiple forms of knowledge, expertise, and values across science and society.
