Collection description

"The 11 to 16 Study aimed to explore how factors such as social class and gender influence health and health-related behaviours—including smoking and physical activity—during early to mid-adolescence. A cohort of young people completed school-based questionnaires at ages 11, 13, and 15. At each stage, nurses conducted health interviews that included physical measurements such as height and weight. At age 11, parents and teachers also completed brief questionnaires. At age 15, participants completed a computer-based assessment (Voice-DISC) focused on emotional wellbeing.
The 16+ Study was a follow-up of the same cohort, with parental consent allowing researchers to contact participants at home. Data collection included an interview at ages 18–20 and a postal questionnaire at age 22. The study aimed to assess physical and mental health outcomes and health behaviours in late adolescence, again examining links to social class and gender.

Additionally, the data allow for longitudinal comparisons with an earlier cohort from the West of Scotland Twenty-07 Study, who were born 12 years earlier and surveyed at similar ages. This enables analysis of generational changes in adolescent health and its determinants. The combined study ran from 1994 to 2006 and included 2,586 participants. This data is identifiable.
