Collection description

The Historical Thesaurus of English is a comprehensive semantic database mapping the development of meaning in the English language over approximately 1,300 years, from Old English to the present day. It organises the vocabulary of English by meaning rather than alphabetically, with approx. 240,000 hierarchically-arranged categories, each representing a concept and containing all recorded words and expressions that have conveyed that meaning throughout the history of the language. The Thesaurus was compiled at the University of Glasgow over six decades, originally published in print by Oxford University Press (2009), and has been maintained as a digital resource at ht.ac.uk since 2015.
