Collection description

The dataset comprises biographical details of over 100 construction workers employed on building the University of Glasgow between 1867 and 1871. It provides contextual evidence for the construction of one of the outstanding public buildings of Victorian Britain, and it links the University of Glasgow directly to other important construction projects carried out elsewhere by the same workforce. Through specific examples, it illustrates the mobility of those involved in the building trades in the 19th century.
