GoWell East (GoEast) was a nested evaluation study within the wider GoWell programme, designed to examine the impacts of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and related regeneration interventions on communities in Glasgow’s inner East End. The study area included Bridgeton, Calton, Camlachie, Dalmarnock, Gallowgate, and parts of Parkhead, covering over 10,000 households and a population of nearly 19,000 residents. GoEast aimed to assess how neighbourhood changes—including new sports facilities, the Athletes’ Village, mixed housing developments, and wider regeneration activities—affected residential conditions, social and community outcomes, empowerment, and health and wellbeing. Baseline data were collected in 2012 prior to the Games, followed by repeat surveys, qualitative interviews, and focus groups with residents, housing managers, and stakeholders. Project findings included assessments of the potential economic benefits of the Games for the host community, the contribution of regeneration to physical activity, and insights into residents’ experiences of living next to a mega-event. Academic outputs highlighted factors needed to achieve lasting economic and health benefits, and the importance of a high-quality urban environment for creating a broader health and wellbeing legacy.
