This study examined the spatial distribution of alcohol outlets by area-level deprivation across Glasgow, Scotland, and to explore how neighbourhood boundaries and spatial scale may influence access to alcohol. The dataset focuses on off-sales outlets (premises where alcohol could be purchased to take away). A comprehensive list of licensed premises in Glasgow was obtained from Glasgow City Council (2007). In Autumn 2009, fieldworkers visited all off-sales outlets, photographed their exteriors, and completed a structured coding form capturing information such as shop category, window alcohol promotion, price-based attractors, security measures, age restrictions, and neighbouring premises. These data were coded and entered into SPSS. Each outlet was assigned an income deprivation score using the 2009 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (Income sub-domain) at the data zone level (694 zones within Glasgow). The 345 off-sales outlets were then categorised into quintiles based on income deprivation, enabling analysis of the relationship between deprivation and outlet characteristics. The resulting dataset provides detailed, spatially-referenced observational data on alcohol retail environments in Glasgow and associated area-level socioeconomic context.
