SHINE aims to help transform health and wellbeing outcomes for young people in Scotland through high quality, school-based health improvement research and data driven innovation. The SHINE network developed the SHINE online pupil mental health survey as a free and flexible resource for school members of the network. Each academic year, pseudonymised survey responses are collated into a national dataset. METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- The SHINE network includes local authority primary and secondary schools, independent schools and special schools across Scotland. Schools in the network are able to take part in the SHINE online pupil mental health survey. The survey is offered on a voluntary and flexible basis, with schools choosing when to take part and which year groups to survey, following standardised research guidelines. Data are collected from primary school pupils (Primary 6 and 7, ages 9-12 years) and from secondary school pupils (in years Secondary 1 to Secondary 6, ages 12 -18 years-old) The SHINE survey adopted a broad understanding of mental health and asked young people about different aspects of their mental health: (i) subjective wellbeing (ii)mental health problems and (iii) positive mental health and (iv) other aspects related to mental health and wellbeing. There are 2 versions of the survey to ensure that they are age appropriate: • Primary version for P6 and P7 - which includes Children’s Society Good Childhood Index, Me and My Feelings Questionnaire, Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire, WHO 5 Wellbeing Index, Social-Emotional Health Survey. • Secondary version for S1 to S6- which includes Children’s Society Good Childhood Index, Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire, WHO 5 Wellbeing Index, Social-Emotional Health Survey, Adolescent Sleep Wake Scale. Each school had a designated SHINE Lead who coordinates the administration and staff involved efficiently across the school. The survey was administered online, in the classroom, usually within a PSE class. An exception was made for S6 pupils who were sometimes invited to complete the survey outwith timetabled class time and some pupils, who completed the survey at home when the schools were operating remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The SHINE pupil mental health survey was granted ethical approval by The College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences Ethics Committee of the University of Glasgow. The survey is offered to all SHINE member schools, to use on a flexible basis, according to certain guidelines. Participating schools were provided with Parental and Pupil Information Sheets. Pupils whose parents returned an opt-out consent form were not invited to complete the questionnaire. Pupils themselves could also opt out of the survey on the day by choosing not to take part at all or by selecting ‘prefer not to say’ at individual questions -------------------------- D DOCUMENTATION FILES -------------------------- - SHINE Mental health survey School Information Sheet (pdf) - SHINE Mental health survey Pupil Information Sheet (pdf) - SHINE Mental health survey Parent Information Sheet (pdf) - SHINE Mental health survey Class Teacher Instructions (pdf) - Guidance on survey administration for SHINE Lead (pdf)
