Files may be opened using the Gatan software, however the files are readable by open source software package HyperSpy (http://hyperspy.org/). All data was acquired using a JEOL ARMcFEG instrument at 200kV, equipped with a Gatan Quantum electron spectrometer for EELS measurements and a Medipix3 detector for differential phase contrast. Micromagnetic simulation software The simulation package was run using the MuMax code as detailed in the paper. The files provided here are in Digital Micrograph format as *.dm3. TEM images calculation Fresnel images were calculted using the Digital Micrograph program wriiten at thr University of Glasgow which implemented the Mansuripur code to calculate the magnetic phase effect and standard wave optical calculations to then calculate the magnetic images. All images are provided as *.dm3 or *.tiff file format. Figure 1 All EELS datasets were collected using a 200kV accelerating voltage with a STEM probe current of approx. 180pA at a 2cm camera length, probe convergence half angle 29mrad and a collection half angle of 36mrad.
